EXAMPLES OF VIDEO AND SOUND CLIPS FROM THE DOCUMENTARY

I know that when I look at a site whose main purpose is to describe a videotaped product, I'd like to see some example footage and sound from the production. With that in mind, here are some examples of sequences from the BBS Documentary collection. Remember, there are over five and a half hours of footage across the 8 episodes!

ARTSCENE: "RIPPING"

"Ripping" in the ANSI artscene means that someone would take your artwork, rework it, or borrow heavily from it without any credit; on-line artistic plagarism. A couple members of various art groups talk about how disrespectful and foolish this was.

FIDONET: "JENNINGS AND MADILL"

Tom Jennings and John Madill, part of the group of programmers and engineers who worked on Fidonet, discuss collaborating on BBS programs across the country without meeting. As you can see from this sequence, there's no shying away from technical terms and concepts, and the people involved are given room to talk about what they were up to. Fidonet's story is one of the most complicated in online history, and this episode takes a shot at telling it in as clear a manner as possible.

DR. VINTON CERF

It's rather hard to speak about Dr. Cerf without using superlatives. He's a co-engineer of TCP/IP and has the often-used moniker of 'Father of the Internet'. He continues to do pioneering work in Internet and communications technologies, and it was by luck I found out that he had spoken at BBSCON '93 on the subject of the Internet. (He said it would be very important.) I asked if it would be possible to interview him about BBSes, and he agreed! Shows it never hurts to ask.
Length of Clip: 1:33.
